It’s no secret that publishers are doing less and you, the author, are becoming more directly responsible for the success of your book. Budgets are tight (yes, you’ve heard this, I know) and, frankly, marketing dollars don’t always pay off the way we’d like. I’ll have more to say in the next few months about the nuances of self-marketing your book—what works and what makes sense for you. In the meantime, here’s a hugely valuable resource, especially if you’re a beginner. Penguin Group USA produced this marvelous—and free—Author’s Guide to Online Marketing (downloadable PDF) a few years ago, and there's something to learn in every line. Your homework? Figure out how to put it to work for your book—and for you.

I have just read this blog and will be following along as well. I have recently submitted an article for peer review to CCN. These great tips of wisdom are valuable to me. I believe nurses must be their own agent throughout their career and this column is chock-full of ways to navigate in our profession, being an agent for ourselves with a defined platform in hand. I have been customizing my own platform keeping my passion as my Beacon Light. In this way, I have emerged among my peers as a very unique nurse whom has cornered the market in my geographic area, on providing Preventive Health Education to an aggregate community group. My group of adult learners are long distance motorcycle riders and I provide health maintenance, nutrition and fitness education for them. I blogged a 16,000 Four Corners Journey last summer (see link), created a brochure to share among the community, provide guest speaking engagements, spread the word about safe ways to care for self while being exposed to the elements of nature and riding long distances. I am a CCRN in Phildelphia, practicing In the UPHS system, Interventional Cardiology, providing nursing education related to research utilization inspiration to all nurses. This blending of my expertise and passion excites me and all who hear my message that nurses do more than bedside caring. My platform is growing and becoming more defined with time and this column is so important to me. Thank you for beginning our new journey to publication! Michele
